Bunche Fellows Program

The Bunche Fellows Program funds undergraduate students with a strong interest in to the study of Black life. Undergraduate fellows work on faculty-led research projects, take a year-long research course, and receive $12,000 for the fellowship year.

Under the leadership of Dr. Walter Allen, the Bunche Fellows Program (BFP) funds undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdoctoral scholars to study the conditions of Black life. Our undergraduate and graduate fellows work on faculty-led research projects while our postdoctoral fellows are appointed for two-year fellowships in collaboration with the UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.

Undergraduate Fellowship Qualifications:

• Incoming Transfer Student
• Minimum 3.0 GPA
• Passion for African American Studies
• Desire to strengthen skills in research methodology

All majors are welcome, however, priority is given to African American Studies majors and minors. Recruitment for the fellowship begins in January of each calendar year.

Recipients of the fellowship are matched with a Faculty Mentor and required to take a research course each quarter of their fellowship year (fall through summer) with BFP Faculty Director, Dr. Walter Allen.
